Bee Disease Education Day – 28 June 2014

North Somerset Beekeepers are hosting this one day training event from the Area and Local Bee inspectors.

When:- June 28th 2014, 9am – 4.30pm

Where:- Sidcot Quaker Meeting House, Oakridge Lane, Sidcot, BS25 1LT.  Winscombe Community Centre, 11 Sandford Rd, 
Winscombe, North Somerset, BS25 1JA **Please note change of venue**

The day will be both theory and practical and will cover the following topics:

* Hygiene, husbandry & disease – Tips on apiary hygiene, the notifiable diseases, barrier management.

* Practical apiary disease inspection – Tips on handling bees, how to carry out a proper disease inspection for the foulbroods and exotic pests.

* Varroa biology and IPM – Biology of the varroa mite and biotechnical methods for its control.

* Varroacides and Veterinary Medicine Records – Approved UK products and other EU products available under the Cascade System.

* Diseased comb recognition – Hands on diseased combs , EFB, AFB and some of the minor diseases, use of the Lateral Flow Device.

Cost for the day is £5 per person (pay on the day) which will include light refreshments (not lunch).

Attendees will need to bring their own protective bee suits/boots & disposable gloves.

Event presented in association with Bee Diseases Insurance Ltd (BDI) BDI provides insurance for the replacement of beekeeping equipment should it have to be destroyed due to an incidence of a notifiable disease, such as European or American Foul Brood.  Whilst Bee Diseases Insurance Ltd’s primary aim is that of providing insurance against losses incurred when disease is found, its aims also include the Promotion of other measures for mitigating the losses suffered by beekeepers through bee diseases or other causes’. In other words, working towards a healthy bee population in England and Wales.
