Bee Gym – a green way to deal with varroa mite?

Could a new invention be a green way to deal with the varroa bee mite?

The varroa mite is the scourge of beekeepers, a parasite that attacks and weakens honey bees, sometimes destroying whole colonies.

Getting rid of it typically involves chemically treating the hive.

But could a new, non-chemical device called a Bee Gym help to fight varroa?

The Bee Gym is the idea of Stuart Roweth (pictured). It is essentially a scratching post for bees that sits inside the beehive.

The way it works is simple. A bee scratches itself against the device as part of everyday grooming, rubbing off any varroa or other parasite living on it.
