Photos and Report – Grand Opening of our new apiary

After nearly two years of searching for a new site, we beekeepers have finally celebrated the official opening of our new teaching apiary in Brockley. Geographically central to this wide-spread branch, our members can now improve their skills & learn new ones. Members and their guests were joined by Richard Simon and Thomas Heiser of Solarsense for the unveiling of the new apiary sign by one of our members, John Penrose, MP.

In very hot weather, we all melted and the gazebos that were originally brought along ‘in case of rain’ were used instead to provide shade. Thanks go to all of you who have helped in any way to get this apiary up and running. This has involved many expeditions to view plots of land for sale, attending various working parties, maintenance of the site, and finally getting the apiary prepared for the opening in Saturday afternoon’s heat.

Our retiring President, Tom Salter, was thanked and made an Honorary Member in recognition of his contribution and commitment to the branch. Thanks were also expressed to Peter Carter for his years of work on the committee and at meetings & shows, and for having the presence of mind to marry a wonderful cake maker! (See photo of ‘hive’ bees.) Tom leaves us for Hampshire and Peter is relocating to Ireland.

All the hard work has at last come to fruition and the celebration was attended by many of those who had put in that hard work.

Several thousand bees also attended, behaved very well and did not swarm!
